Simple and fun game
We purchased this game for Christmas 2025 and have already worn the game out! It is simple, fun, and can be completed in under 30 minutes.

Fun! Understandable but not too hard
This was really fun! Just complicated enough to keep it interesting, but not so complicated that it takes a long time to figure out how to play

Lots of “But Ifs” Made This Frustrating To Learn: Let Everyone See the Examples & Also Watch a Video
This seems like a challenging game to learn when you are just getting started and my best advice is to search for and watch the “How to Play Happy Mochi” video by ZygoMatic in addition to showing everyone the instruction sheet. We had someone read the rules to the group and it was too much!Game play is actually pretty simple, although there is a lot to grasp initially. There are two types of playing cards: 70 colored cards numbered from 0 to 9, and 1 card with a plus on one side and a minus on the other, known as the “Value Card”. Two of the number cards (the “Central Duo”) are placed face up on the table and the Value card begins with the plus sign showing. Players are dealt 7 cards for their hand, which must stay in the order in which they were dealt.Players try to get rid of all their cards by playing two adjacent cards (a “Duo) from their hand that meet the criteria presented on the Value card and the two number cards: A plus sign means the two cards played have to represent a number larger than the value of the two face up “Central Duo” cards and a minus means the value must be less. Let’s say the Value Card is a plus and the Central Duo are a pink 8 and a blue 7, or “87” (not 15). If a player has two adjacent cards in their hand that meet the criteria – a 9 and a 0 or “90”, for example, they can play those cards over the 8 and the 7. That represents the most basic play; however, there are a lot of “but, ifs” involved. For example, if the two central cards have the same color – a pink 8 and a pink 7 – then the player’s cards must also be the same color as each other in addition to meeting the value requirement – a blue 9 and a blue 0, for example. OR, if the player has an adjacent pair of cards with the same number – a pair of 4’s, for example, (a “Happy Mochi”) – then the player can play those without regard for the plus/minus or central card values. Additionally, the cards played may (or may not) carry “Card Effect” symbols that mean either 1) the Value Card must be flipped from plus to minus or vice versa or 2) the player can pick a person, including themselves, to draw an additional card to add to any position in their hand from either the deck of undistributed number cards or either of the two Central Duo cards showing in the middle of the table. [The video I watched mentions a 3rd option, but I wouldn’t want to overwhelm you, LOL.] If both cards have card effects, then both are used. If a player doesn’t have an adjacent pair of cards that are the right color or that meet the value criteria or that match each other, then the player draws a card they can insert into any position in their hand.As soon as one player is out of cards, play stops and the other players add up the face values of the cards in their hand as their “penalty” score for that round. The Value Card is left as it is for the next round, while all the number cards are shuffled and dealt by the player to the left of the player who won the last round (i.e. who played all their cards). Play continues in rounds until one player accumulates a penalty score of 30 or more and the player with the lowest penalty score is the winner of the game. Our group was clearly overthinking things when we played. For example, there are dots beside the 6’s and 9’s to presumably differentiate them, although it seems totally unnecessary given the design of the cards. Maybe it was due to our group expecting more complexity or that the dots seemed superfluous, but our group mistook them for decimal places in the value comparisons. Only later did I notice the dots were only on the 6’s and 9’s. It definitely made some of our turns more difficult. Also, the video I watched referred to each player having a discard pile that each player adds a card to in-between rounds, and can draw from later, but that isn’t mentioned on the written rule sheet that is included with the cards. Maybe the designers realized that they had gone too far with variations on play and nixed the discard piles.Once I understood the various exceptions and caveats of the game, I actually liked it, but I did forget parts, like that I could choose myself to draw a card, which would have been smart because I only had one card left. The other members of the family (age 11 to seniors) were initially frustrated and confused by hearing a lot of rules read to them by the teenaged participant (without benefit of the examples) and they didn’t really give the game much of a chance. Some felt like it would be too easy for players to rearrange their hands to rig the game, either intentionally or not, as our youngest had an unexpected number of “Happy Mochi” duos. The cards are standard quality and colorfully designed but I wish the box provided better storage because they didn’t fit back in the box the way they came but are too loose in the box without the packaging. We only played one round so I’m not sure how it would have turned out in the end, but I would personally give this game another chance now that I grasp the rules. I’m afraid it won’t be with this particular group again, though.

Good game for casual play
Great game, easy to understand and portable. Cards are of good quality although I still use sleeves to protect them.

Cute and fun
Made some of my group mates angry and some laughing due to its fun mechanic. You have to say “Happy Mochi” to win it.
